How to use the DirectAdmin API with Codex or Claude
Use the modern DirectAdmin API with a username and password or a recommended Login Key, with cURL examples and prompts for Codex or Claude.
The modern DirectAdmin API lets you query and manage hosting functions through HTTPS requests that return JSON. You can use it from an assistant such as Codex or Claude to get an overview of your account, check usage, or prepare a specific operation.
In this guide, you will choose how to authenticate, test three queries, and learn to give precise instructions to the AI. You can use your DirectAdmin username and password or your username and a Login Key. Login Keys are the recommended option for integrations, but they are not required. The URL and server name, domain, username, limits, and available tools may vary depending on your service. Use your own hosting access details.
1. What you need before you begin
Your DirectAdmin username and a valid credential: your account password or a Login Key. You only need the Login Keys tool if you choose to create a Login Key.
The panel's HTTPS address, including its port. Do not use your website address as though it were the panel address.
A local terminal with cURL 7.84 or later, to support quoted values in the credentials file. The commands in this guide use Bash or Zsh syntax, available on macOS, Linux, or WSL.
For the AI to run the queries: a local session with terminal tools and HTTPS access to the panel. If the session only supports conversation, run the commands yourself and share only the necessary results, without credentials.
Codex CLI and Claude Code can run commands in the environment where they work. Sharing a Swagger link in a chat does not grant access to the hosting: an execution tool, connectivity, and an authorized credential are also required.

2. Check your server's API contract
From the DirectAdmin dashboard, open Support & Help → API Documentation. There you can check the /api/... routes, their methods, parameters, request bodies, and responses. The presence of an operation in the catalog does not mean your account has permission to run it.

The /static/swagger.json file describes the modern API included on the server. Provide it to the AI so it uses existing routes and fields. It must not infer endpoints from an icon's name or assume that a feature on another server is available on yours.

For another server, replace the hostname and port in that link with those of your panel. The following examples use panel.example.com as a placeholder; you must replace it. Keep HTTPS certificate validation enabled.
3. Choose an authentication method
Both options use HTTP Basic over HTTPS. In both cases, the username is your DirectAdmin username; what changes is the value you send as the password.
DirectAdmin username and password: use the same password you use to access the panel. You do not need to create a Login Key. Requests will have your account's permissions, without the additional restrictions of a dedicated key; you will not gain permissions beyond those of your account.
Username and Login Key — recommended: keep your DirectAdmin username and use the Login Key value instead of your usual password. You can restrict commands and IPs, set an expiration date, and revoke that key independently. Its name is just a label, not the API username.
We recommend a Login Key for working with an AI because it lets you dedicate a credential to that integration and limit its scope. If you prefer your usual password, go straight to step 4: the same examples work with both options.
If you choose the recommended option, create a Login Key with limited permissions. Open Advanced Features → Login Keys and click Create Key. The name of this tool may appear as Login Keys or Access Keys depending on the panel's language.
Key Name: enter an identifiable label, for example iaConsultas. This label does not replace your DirectAdmin username.
Key Value: generate a random value and keep it somewhere private. It will be the integration's password. The key cannot be recovered if you forget it.
Expires In: keep expiration enabled and choose an appropriate duration for the task. You can enable automatic deletion upon expiration.
Allow HTM: leave it unchecked to use this key only through the API.
Commands: search for db-show and select Allow in that row. For the query examples, do not select management permissions such as db-manage or groups that grant all commands. Search for login-keys and select Deny to prevent management of other keys.
Allowed IPs: if you have a stable outbound public IP address, add it. This is the IP address from which cURL will run, which may change if you use a VPN or another environment. Do not enter the server's IP address here by default.
Current Password: enter your account password in the panel itself and click Create. Save the Login Key value privately before leaving.

A Login Key limits account access, but permissions may cover a group of routes and operations. Do not assume that writing “read-only” in a prompt turns any key into a read-only key. If a tool is missing or an operation is denied, check its availability with support.
4. Save the credential for cURL to use
The credentials file works for both options. In login, enter your DirectAdmin username, and in password, enter your usual account password or the value of your chosen Login Key. Use only one credential. cURL will send HTTP Basic; do not send these values as a Bearer token.
On your local computer, create a private file outside the project folder. These commands prepare the folder and file without including the secret in your history:
mkdir -p "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia"
chmod 700 "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia"
(umask 077; touch "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia/credentials.netrc")
chmod 600 "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia/credentials.netrc"Open that file yourself in a local editor and complete these three lines. In machine, enter only the hostname, without https:// or :2222. Replace TU_CONTRASENA_O_LOGIN_KEY with your chosen credential and retain the format's double quotes:
machine panel.example.com
login "TU_USUARIO_DIRECTADMIN"
password "TU_CONTRASENA_O_LOGIN_KEY"Quotation marks preserve spaces. Within a quoted value, represent a double quote as \" and a backslash as \\. Enter the value in the editor, not as a terminal command. Do not change your password to fit the example.
The file contains the password or Login Key in plain text; protect it and do not upload it to your hosting, Git, or the chat. Permissions of 600 allow your local user to read it, including an agent acting as that user: they do not provide isolation from the agent itself. Instruct it to let cURL read the file and not display its contents.
Set the panel URL in the same terminal where you will run the examples. This variable contains no secrets:
DA_URL='https://panel.example.com:2222'An AI session may use another terminal and not inherit this variable. Include the URL in the task and ask it to set DA_URL in its own execution environment. The DirectAdmin credential is independent of the credentials you use to access Codex or Claude.
5. Example: check the account identity
curl --disable --silent --show-error --fail-with-body \
--proto '=https' --connect-timeout 10 --max-time 30 \
--netrc-file "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia/credentials.netrc" \
--header 'Accept: application/json' \
"$DA_URL/api/session"Check that effectiveUsername matches your username, that effectiveRole is user for a hosting account, and that selectedDomain matches the active domain. This last field may be empty on accounts without a selected domain; it does not represent a list of all your domains. allowedCommands helps you review the commands allowed with the credential used.
If the identity does not match, stop before running other operations. Do not share the full response if you only need the AI to confirm a few fields.
6. Example: check usage and limits
curl --disable --silent --show-error --fail-with-body \
--proto '=https' --connect-timeout 10 --max-time 30 \
--netrc-file "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia/credentials.netrc" \
--header 'Accept: application/json' \
"$DA_URL/api/session/user-usage"The response includes disk quota, transfer, and resource counters. Objects such as quotaBytes contain usage and limit. For resources without a limit, unlimited: true may appear; do not interpret a negative limit as available space or calculate a percentage based on it.
For a quota with a positive limit, the percentage is usage × 100 / limit. Fields ending in Bytes are expressed in bytes: divide by 1,073,741,824 to convert to GiB. The figures are those reported by DirectAdmin; they are not an instantaneous measurement of CPU or RAM.
7. Example: listing databases
curl --disable --silent --show-error --fail-with-body \
--proto '=https' --connect-timeout 10 --max-time 30 \
--netrc-file "$HOME/.config/directadmin-ia/credentials.netrc" \
--header 'Accept: application/json' \
"$DA_URL/api/db-show/databases?no-size=true"The no-size=true parameter skips calculating database sizes. If you receive HTTP 200 and [], the query succeeded and there are no databases to list for that account. When databases exist, use the names returned by the server; do not invent names or prefixes. This query does not download tables or their records.
You can also try it in the panel documentation:
Open the Database section and expand GET /api/db-show/databases.
Click Try it out and select true for no-size.
Click Execute and review Server response, the HTTP status code, and Response body.
Distinguish the actual result from Example Value: the latter is a sample of the API contract, not your account data.

8. Giving Codex or Claude a specific task
Open a local Codex or Claude Code session with terminal tools. Keep its permission controls in place and approve only the necessary local and network access. For these examples, cURL only needs to read the private file and connect to your panel; you do not need to install components on the hosting account.
Start with this task, adjusting the server and username:
Quiero revisar mi hosting mediante la API moderna de DirectAdmin.
Panel: https://panel.example.com:2222
Usuario esperado: TU_USUARIO_DIRECTADMIN
Contrato: https://panel.example.com:2222/static/swagger.json
Credencial local: $HOME/.config/directadmin-ia/credentials.netrc
1. /api/session
2. /api/session/user-usage
3. /api/db-show/databases?no-size=true
After obtaining the inventory, you can ask for an interpretation of resource usage:
Con la respuesta de /api/session/user-usage, calcula el porcentaje
de cuota de disco utilizado y expresa los bytes en GiB. Respeta
unlimited=true y los límites negativos. Señala qué recursos tienen
un límite positivo y están por encima del 80 %. No borres nada,
no cambies el plan y no atribuyas estos datos a CPU o RAM.When preparing a change, separate the proposal from its execution. For example, you can ask for a plan to create a database without authorizing its creation yet. This instruction also applies if your regular password already allows changes:
Revisa el Swagger de mi servidor y prepara un plan para crear
una base de datos vacía mediante POST /api/db-manage/create-db.
Comprueba primero que la ruta exista y lee su esquema de entrada.
Consulta las bases existentes con la credencial configurada.
Indica nombre completo, prefijo requerido, campos obligatorios,
If you use a Login Key restricted to db-show, you will not be able to create databases with it. If you later authorize creation, we recommend a separate key for that task and reviewing the scope of db-manage, which includes other database operations. With your regular password, your account permissions apply. In both cases, an instruction in the prompt does not reduce the credential's technical permissions. After an authorized operation, require a query to confirm the result.
9. Interpreting errors and removing access
HTTP 200: also check that the JSON contains the expected result. An empty response may be valid.
HTTP 400: check the parameters and request schema in your server's Swagger documentation.
HTTP 401: review the username and the selected credential. If you use a password, check that it is the current DirectAdmin password; if you use a Login Key, review its value, expiration, and source restrictions. Avoid repeated retries.
HTTP 403: the identity may be valid, but it lacks authorization for the route. Do not fix this by granting all permissions.
HTTP 404: check the route and the available version. Do not try invented addresses.
HTTP 429: wait for the interval specified by the server, if provided, before retrying.
A TLS error requires checking the panel hostname and its certificate. Do not disable validation.
If a timeout or server error occurs during a write operation, check whether the resource was created before repeating it.
If you used a Login Key, return to Login Keys when you finish and delete the key you no longer need. Check that it disappears from the list. Deleting the local netrc file does not by itself revoke the key on the server. If the key is exposed, revoke it and create a new one before continuing.
If you used your regular password, there is no Login Key to revoke. Delete the local file when you no longer need it; this does not change the DirectAdmin password or invalidate other copies. If the password is exposed, change it from the panel. You do not need to change it simply because you have finished a query.
